lights, camera . . . action!

so you may have read that last weekend i had my first ever product photo shoot. and here's a little behind the scenes of how it all went...

i guess it all starts with a few weeks before the shoot actually. i had been thinking about ideas for the shoot and whilst discussing with Monica during one of the Clarity Coaching sessions we cam up with and outside theme, cushions lined up on chairs with lampshades hanging above from a tree branch...fantastic!

first thing was to source a location. Emily (my old housemate) has a ground floor flat with garden. with a fence and grass and tree. now that may sound like obvious garden material but in London it's not all that easy. trust me. and to add to that Emily also had a tree branch going spare. as you do.

so next i needed chairs. onto good old ebay. i bagged 6 for £15. now they had to be collected. that's where best pal Alice and my lovely Mum came into play to collect them for a various locations in Kent (parents location). so now i had a lovely selection of mismatched chairs. but they were a bit dark so Dad painted them for me in white, blue and purple to match the colours of my palette. now i just needed to get them to London. Caroline (HI CAROLINE!!) collected them to drop off on the day of the shoot. her fiance, Mr Sam Nesbitt, is the photographer who will be shooting my products on the saturday so they will bring them up with them then.

so a week before the shoot i started looking at the weather. hmmm. not great. mild panic but the english weather can change at the drop of a hat so no need to panic just yet. let's wait until 3 days before.

3 days before came along and...still rain. crap.

back up plans needed, and quick! now this is something i hadn't thought about which is very much unlike me. i am very organised and like to plan for every outcome when taking on a project like this. so why hadn't i this time? goodness knows, but i won't let it happen again that's for sure!

so options were moving the shoot inside Emily's flat. but there was no wall big enough to take the set up. OUT.

do the whole shoot in the studio. now it wouldn't have anywhere near the texture that i wanted but it would be clean and fresh and have the lighting that would be important. POSSIBLE.

or i could postpone, but due to restrictions on time by both me (3 week holiday) and the photographer (wedding) this would mean it would not take place until at the earliest the first week of october. not an option because at this point i'll be starting my Smart Creative Style e-course and doing my new website portfolios, marketing and brochures for Top Drawer. OUT.

my flat. last minute panic where i was laying out all the accessories i could use i realised i have a nice long wall, but manky walls. could they pass? i was very hopeful (just desperate at that point i think is more likely!) that there could be some amazing camera that could make wood chip walls appear nice and smooth. no such luck. OUT.

so i contacted a good fried, Eric, husband of Kim who i work with. they have just moved house but were very accommodating and offered their place. it was perfect! they had a garden (in case the weather did perk up) and they had 3 rooms to pick from. SOLD!

right. panic aside. i could sleep again! a last minute shop for some frames, accessories, and wrapping paper.  who knew it could be so hard to find some plain colour wrapping paper these days? goodness me what a task. Kim had a watering can, and Mark helped me collect a palette from work as a bit of a quirky option to go in the shots. didn't have a clue how i might use it but better to have too much than not enough, right?

anyhoo, saturday morning came and cars were loaded with products and props. first stop was Touchwood Studios in Kingston. Oscar met us and helped set up the studio for my white background shots. in and out within 3 hours. success!

onto the house of Eric! where he and Tennison greeted us in excitement. we took a look around and selection the room of choice - the garage. great brick work there would make a great backdrop. and hello there mr sunshine. well, kind of. it wasn't exactly sunny but it wasn't raining either. we decided to chance it and take some outside shots so we set up the chairs along the fence and took cushion shots. it was a bit windy and so the lampshades-hanging-from-a-branch set up wasn't going to work. oh well. you win some you lose some.

lunch. much needed.

back to work. and into the garage. lampshades were strung up and some group shots taken. the wind was messing with us so we had to wait until the lampshades were still but we got the shots we were after. before you knew it the day was over. doesn't time fly!

i realised at the end of the day i hadn't used the watering can, the palette, any of the house-y accessories or the plants i'd brought along. doh! but to be fair the set ups we had were enough by themselves so no biggie. Sam took some great shots and i'm so pleased the weather held out for us to get a few outside snaps. shame the tree branch idea didn't come to life but what with the wind and risk of rain i think it wouldn't have been possible. about 15 minutes after we packed up outside it started to rain!

home time. well, Sam & Caroline travelled home and i went to Emily's where she cooked me a lovely dinner and we chatted about the day and started to organise her hen-do. for next May. yes, that's right, the hen do is booked for 9 months time. told you i was organised ;)

now i bet you want to see some of the photos don't you? after reading all that you wouldn't want to get this far and be disappointed with no shots from the day now would you? well, i'm afraid i might just have to disappoint. i know, i know, i'm mean, i'm sorry! but it'll be worth the wait. i want to get them as i want them before showing them off so you'll have to be patient just a tad longer.

oh alright then, here's a little teaser of some chair shots (pre-edit) ...

and i'd like to thank all the people involved in this project...aren't they a smiley bunch :)

Alice & Mum (chair collectors), Dad (chair painter)

Mark & Emily (prop movers, tree branch supplier), Caroline (assistant)

Oscar (Touchwood Studios), Sam (photographer), Eric (location supplier)

Liz, Rachel & Sarah (bouncing ideas around)

and Tenny (just 'cos he's cute)

the big plan . . . 6! (plus a little panic)

i'm in a bit of a reflective mood tonight. i think it's because i am going on holiday for 3 weeks next wednesday and that is a long time without my macbook and photoshop!! i know, i know...i'm lame, let it go, have a break...blah blah blah.

but i can't! i love it too much!

but i have my doodle pad to take with me and of course my camera to get snap happy. there'll be LOTS of FB pics whilst i'm away, that i can assure you!

so anyway...back to deep thinking...hmmmm...

i've had a lot of deadlines in past two weeks (2 of which i haven't reached yet so probably shouldn't be sat here writing a blog post but hey-ho)...and i am working towards getting loose ends tied up before i leave. so it's made me look back at how the past few months have been. i've thought about the designs i have chosen for my first trade show, the products i selected, how they all work together. and having the photo shoot was the first time i've had them all out together. they looked pretty good! (am i allowed to say that?!) i just hope that other people like them. that's the scary part!

my wall is looking rather full and wholesome. things are tying together nicely. but i'm now getting that nervous feeling. the one where you worry that actually everything isn't quite right - 'that blue is the wrong tone', and 'the yellow is too bright'. 'i should've gone for that palette on that cushion'. and it's all because it's all too real now.

the contract is signed. it's happening.

don't get me wrong - excited as hell! - but it now means judgement day is that much more a reality and it's blimmin' scary!!

of course, it'll all be alright on the night...but...

you can't help but have moments of sheer panic, questioning what you have done and what you are doing. the support i have is incredible. thank you to everyone that contacts me, gives me boosts, 'likes' my posts, shares my work - it means a hell of a lot, especially at a time like this.

so there's basically no turning back. dun-dun-duuuun.

a little mellow dramatic there, sorry. but yes, it's a done deal. next things to do are get the website done, get the shop up and running, market to blogs and mags, get some items in some local shops, update portfolios, and (last but not least) get advertising for the show! let's drum up some excitement (i'll probably call on you lot for a bit of help with that if you don't mind).

but i think i need to stop thinking about it all otherwise i'll never get to sleep...night all.

July - round up

last month i set myself some challenges to keep those creative juices going. i can't say i've been as successful as i'd hoped. oh dear.

A DRAWING A DAY aka #dailydraw. all went swimmingly for the first week and then other commitments 'got in the way'. but that's really just an excuse. i'm a bit scared of drawing as i haven't done it for a while so tend to put it off. but i know this isn't going to get me anywhere so i need to be stricter on myself. but i did manage to do some on holiday last week...

ETSY TREASURIES. i wanted to promote fellow designer makers and show off their crafting skills - and i have managed to keep up with this! well, i missed one week...but only one. catch up here.

MONTHLY REVIEW. well, i'm doing one now so that's a big fat tick.  so now onto what i have started / completed / created in the month of july:

* biggest news being i have been accepted for Top Drawer / Home London! hoorah (and phew)! i've written both shows as they are still in talks as t where to place me - i like to think they're fighting over me! ;) basically with the products i plan to showcase they fit into both shows so they are discussing where i would suit most.

* i have FINALLY finished my final range of notebooks. took me a while as i kept tweaking and playing with palettes. i was obviously scared on finishing them for some reason. probably because i'm planning on getting a large stock printed to sell so it's a big commitment, but i've had to just stop otherwise it'll be a never ending process...

* ...and following on from this i have launched a kickstarter project to raise funds for said notebooks. obviously i'm hoping this will be a success so please do share and tweet and FB and scream from the rooftops! you get rewards for your donations so no one leaves empty handed!

* i have started working on some tea towel designs to print and sell alongside the notebooks. these will also be showcased at TD / Home. i think i'll have 2 or 3 sets of 2 that can be all wrapped up nicely as gifts...

* ...and speaking of lovely gift packaging i have my gift swing tags and logo stickers printed and ready to use. now just need to source some pretty string to tie it all together. oh yeah, and get the products the done. kind of important.

* i took a holiday. i know this may not seem like an achievement but the fact that i (almost) didn't think of work for 6 whole days is rather impressive for me. review can be found here. and not to rub it in but this is where i stayed :p

* and whilst on this holiday (it was a hen do) i have a new little side project to work on - some artwork for my friends wedding (not the friend from june - that's emily. caroline is getting married in september so a little more pressing!) i won't give it away but hopefully she'll let me show the final outcome.

* i've readjusted my plan for august and september due to a bit of a crazy splurge - i've booked a 3 week trip to vietnam! so excited but this means these months work will have to be drastically altered. so for august i now want to complete my tea towel designs and hopefully be successful in my kickstarter project.

another pretty successful month i think considering my time off. now off to work on tea towels...i mean drawing...

bonjour monpazier!

i have just returned from a lovely weeks break to the south of france. i visited a beautifully quaint little town called monpazier. the trip was a celebration of my friends upcoming wedding and we stayed in a lovely converted barn. the town was gorgeous as was the weather (at leas 35 degrees each day). the area itself is very green, lots of fields and vineyards but not so many flowers. i snapped what i could though but i think most of them are weeds!

the town was absolutely beautiful - a lovely, quaint little village. we had just missed the medieval festival that weekend but they still had some decorations up. i got a bit carried away taking snaps of the buildings and alleyways - there were lots of cute doors, shutters and they had a bit of a thing for net curtains as well (but of course this is juts more pattern for me so i didn't mind!)

and we were lucky enough to be there for market day - so many colours and gorgeous foods, flowers, bags, soaps... i bought an amazing air plant (no need for soil), and a gorgeous turquoise ceramic dish. no idea where i'm going to put it but it was too good to leave behind!

#dailydraw . . . week 1

as you may have read yesterday one of my recent challenges to myself is to do a doodle-a-day, or - depending how creative i'm feeling - a full drawing a day. here's how #dailydraw week 1 turned out...

i didn't intentionally start out with a theme in mind but i have been wanting to draw from my Amsterdam photos for aaaages and this was the perfect opportunity to start.

day 1: amsterdam architecture
day 2: windmill
day 3: lilies from keunkenhof
day 4: bicycle (i gave up half way through as you can see!)
day 5: detail from a shop
nothing for day 6, tsk tsk...

day 7: window detail

June - round up

i've decided i need more structure. it's very hard when working a full time job and then working on design in the evenings and weekends to keep to what you plan - you're tired from the day job, you have a social event that means you take the night off work, exercise classes because you're finally motivated to at least try and get fit... so to help with this i've made a list of things i need to do more often, things i always add to my to do list week-in-week-out, but for whatever reason never get ticked off.

I WILL DRAW SOMETHING EACH DAY. if you follow me on facebook or twitter you may have seen that i set myself a challenge of drawing something each and every day. pretty darn tricky i have to say. i won't be showing all of them (some leave a lot to be desired!) but here's a couple of the doodles so far, the first week were all taken from photos from my recent trip to amsterdam:

amsterdam architecture
lilies from keukenhof
I WILL CREATE A TREASURY EACH WEEK. i've let my etsy shop slip more than just a little recently. so much of my time has been taken up with research and manufacturing my products that i've abandoned it somewhat. so i want to take a more active approach in promoting not only my items but my favourite etsy shops too.

sunshine on a rainy day
I WILL DO A MONTHLY REVIEW. i have a regular 'big plan' post which follows my ups-and-downs whilst preparing for my first trade show. but i want something where i can keep track of all the other things. i'm quite hard on myself always thinking i haven't done enough when actually some months i've done a fair bit, especially as the day job takes up a lot of my time. so by having a public forum to list all everything might make me less harsh on myself. but it's doubtful! and if i do have a bad month then the fact that's its all public will just make me work harder the next month so i don;t look like a slacker!

so here's june...

* i finalised my notebook designs and sent them off to the printers.

* i signed my contract for being featured in the upcoming PatternBase book

* i submitted designs to the new Zeixs pattern book. fingers crossed i'll be picked...

* i redesigned my logo.

* i completed the Ultimate Guide To Repeats e-course by Michelle Fifis of Pattern Observer

* i started my friends wedding stationery. main motif and palette sorted. (you're stressing less now aren't you Em?! :p )

* i've planned my photo shoot and have a list of props...now just need to find them!

* i have a range of iPad and Kindle covers now for sale with Keka Case

* i've worked out my prices. can't say this went without a few headaches but i got there in the end. so difficult balancing between wholesale costs, RRP, VAT...but i got put on my account hat and pushed through the pain!

* and perhaps most scary is that i finally applied for a space at Top Drawer / Home for January 2014. i haven't been able to without photos of products but now i have lampshades and cushions i had no excuse. i just hope they don't keep me waiting too long with a decision...

...so in conclusion i think after actually writing all that down i don't need to be quite so hard on myself :)

the big plan . . . part 5!

it's been 2 months since my last update and a lot has happened.

I HAVE PRODUCTS!! actual real things!

my lampshades and cushions were delivered all on the same day. like Christmas came early...lots of presents from me to me :) i also received my notebook samples through this week so will be sending off for the final designs this coming week.  i'm not going to show off them just yet but i'll give a little teaser...

so what's next? photo shoot. that's what. and after batting a few ideas around with Sarah Fleming and Monica Lee i have an amazing idea! so excited...just need props and the all-important sunshine and it'll all look fabulous. Mr Samuel Nesbitt will be helping me out with this one...you ready, dude?!

so here's how the wall is looking mid-June...

...final cushion designs - check.
...final lampshade designs - check.
...final notebook designs - (pretty much) check!
...wall art - watch this space!

prices are pretty much sorted (knew my admin skills would come in handy one day...i'm a whizz in excel now!). this means i can start working on my brochures for the show

i had my second mentoring session with Monica of Smart Creative Women and i feel completely motivated right now. i don't know how she does it but she has the amazing ability of making everything the most exciting thing ever and giving you a big (but gentle) kick up the jacksie to get you going again...in a good way of course! we managed to discuss photo shoot, pricing, brochures, promo
packs, marketing, ideas for the show and website ideas - all in one hour! she's beyond amazing! it's now just finding the time to do it all...
